How to find a ‘genuine’ illustrator?

In the recent times, we have all have seen an increased amount of AI art surfacing the internet and other platforms. Which has made it trickier to find genuine artists, as most AI artists present themselves as genuine, offering lower rates which ends up scamming a new writer/author looking to self-publish.

When someone writes a book it’s their dream which they are looking to bring to life with the help of an artist. Therefore I believe, every artist needs to be kind and respectful towards the writer/author looking for genuine children’s book artist.

How to FIGURE out if the artist you are speaking with is a GENUINE Children’s Book Illustrator?

Verifying if a children's book artist is a genuine human artist and not AI-generated involves several steps.
Here are some effective methods:

Portfolio Review:

  • Genuine artists typically have a portfolio/website showing a consistent style and evolution over time.

  • Ask to see preliminary sketches, drafts, or work-in-progress images.

Communication and Interaction:

  • Engage in conversation about their work. Discuss their creative process and inspirations.

  • Request a specific, personalized piece of artwork.

Social Media and Online Presence:

  • Check for interactions and engagement with the art community.

  • Verify that their work across various platforms (e.g., Instagram, Behance, personal website).

References and Testimonials:

  • In case of an accomplished Illustrator, ask for references or testimonials from previous clients or publishers.

  • Check if their work has been published in any recognized children's books. This can often be verified through publishers.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Discuss specific art techniques and tools they use. Genuine artists have in-depth knowledge of their craft, which might include traditional mediums (like watercolor, acrylics) or digital tools (like Photoshop, Procreate).

  1. Copyright and Legal Aspects:

    • Signed Contracts: Request a signed contract or agreement for commissioned work. This should include details like delivery timelines, usage rights, and payment terms.

    • Originality Assurance: Ask for a statement of originality and assurance that the artwork is not AI-generated. Some artists may also provide a certificate of authenticity or add in the contract.

By thoroughly evaluating these aspects, you can better determine if the artist you are dealing with is a genuine human artist and not AI-generated.
